In the first home game of the season, the Mavericks garnered another loss with the final score being 13-36 against a now 2 and 0 Georgetown Eagles team. With all the controversy surrounding the game due to the injury of senior running back Donnie Holmes last week, the loss added an extra sting to an already sore McNeil team.

Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex filled Friday night as the Georgetown Eagles faced off against the McNeil Mavericks. McNeil had their symbol of courage on their side as Holmes sat on the sideline to watch the game. Things looked good as the special teams took down Georgetown with the kickoff, stopping them on their own 10 yard line. But momentum was lost early when the Eagles led a drive down the field and scored on a 32-yard run in the first quarter,  followed by a field goal and another touchdown in the second.

Going into halftime the Mavs were down 0-17 in what felt like a replay from last week’s game against the Vandegrift Vipers. After the halftime show, the Mavs came out running as they led a drive down the field. This secured their first points of the season with a 1 yard run by senior running back Cameron Barrett. This was followed by an immediate response by the Eagles as they went on to score two unanswered touchdowns.

With the score 7-30 going into the fourth quarter, the game looked well in hand for the Eagles, but the Mavs would not surrender as a 53-yard pick six by Caleb Walsh put the Mavs back in the game. This was followed by a failed two-point conversion but a successful onside kick recovery with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles destroyed any chance of a comeback with a 21-yard run leading to a final score of 13-36.

Hayden Cooper led the team in passing with 170 yards and four interceptions, while Tillman Johnson led the team in receiving yards with 66 yards and five receptions.

The Mavericks face off against Del Valle on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex. If McNeil can bring that toughness they brought late in Friday’s game at the start of this week’s game against the Cardinals, then the Mavericks will improve their record to 1-2.
