On Saturday the varsity girls played at another tournament, in which they placed third. The girls played four games, winning against Clemmons and Wimberley, and losing against Connally and Bastrop.

“Right now we’re trying to work on consistency,” junior Mallory Davidson said.

In the last game before the start of district, the Lady Mavs played Leander. The first set started off with junior Hannah Weaver serving to the Lady Lions side where the girls were prepared for the ball, and sent it back over the net. Not all of the Leander girls stayed prepared throughout the set though, slight mishaps such as hitting the net or the ball out of bounds gave the Lady Mavs many of their starting points.

While the points in the beginning came from mishaps, as the game went on, the Lady Mavs and Lady Lions got into the groove of serving, diving for the ball, and working as a team. Junior right side hitter Rebecca Latham scored points by spiking the ball. Each member on the team quickly moved to keep the ball from landing on the ground.

Points climbed higher and higher on the scoreboard. Bleachers quaked with the stomping of feet. Smiles plastered the girls’ faces. Junior varsity and freshman players cheered on the varsity girls. All of the cheering was not enough; the Lady Mavs lost the first set 19-25.

Set for the next game, the girls came back with motivation, ready to play. Three girls, rotating from the front to back, prepped for the oncoming serve, squatting with arms stretched out and hands in a fist. The ball came towards them, and the two girls encouraged the girl hitting the ball up to the front for a pass over the net. A point.

In an effort to get the ball over the net, senior Ryan Reitmeyer and Davidson bump into one another on the ground. Despite the girls’ team effort and the swim team cheering, the Lady Mavs end up losing, 20-25.

After losing two sets, the girls went on a bit discouraged to the third set. Throughout all the sets, junior Sami Frazier kept the team encouraged. The third set came out to be another disappointment, losing 11-25.

On Friday, the Lady Mavs played at home in the first district game against Cedar Ridge, losing 12-25, 23-25, 20-25.
