Lady Mavs Take Down 19th-Ranked Anderson

The varsity girls’ basketball team kicked off the season with a tremendous win over Anderson High School on Nov. 5.

This victory spells great things for the Lady Mavericks for the upcoming season, as the Lady Trojans were ranked #19 in the state.

“It was a big game for us because they beat us last year,” senior Troi Swain said. “The Statesman was actually in favor for Anderson to win just because they were ranked and we weren’t.”

The game started off shaky with a 12-15 first quarter, but as it came into full swing the Lady Mavs began to turn things around, following up with a 17-18 second quarter. After halftime, the Lady Mavs posted a 9-5 third quarter. To end the game, the girls went on a scoring rampage, finishing with a 23-11 quarter for a fantastic final score of 61-49.

“We had a point to prove,” Swain said. “We went out there and played hard and got the win.”

The girls worked hard for this season opener, training extensively to build a strong, talented team. The Lady Mavs take on Elgin High School next at 7:00 p.m. at McNeil High School for their next home game. Be sure to go and give them support.
