Boys’ Basketball Takes a Loss Head On

The Mavs took on the Bowie Bulldogs Nov. 19 in an intense game that went into overtime. The Mavericks lost 60-66 after a neck-and-neck game.
The first quarter started off with the Bulldogs making a three pointer within the first 30 seconds of the game. Most of the quarter was Bowie making shots after shots, but within the last two minutes the Mavs stole the ball and scored to catch up. They battled for the ball back and forth, getting the audience riled up. Luck was on the Bulldogs’ side because they ended the first quarter ahead of the Mavs by six points.
The second quarter was much like the first, with Bowie ahead of the Mavs. During the second quarter, three fouls were called upon the Mavs allowing the Bulldogs to exceed the Mavs 19-23.
For the Mavs, playing the Bulldogs turned out to be a challenge. The Bulldogs made sharp turns and accurate shots heating up the game quickly, although the Mavs did make a comeback. With a foul called on Bowie, the Mavs seized the chance to pounce and score. They caught up with the Bulldogs by the end of the second quarter 26-28.
After halftime was the most intense part of the game because the score fluctuated back and forth. The Mavs managed to get ahead by two points, but the Bulldogs scored a three pointer. A foul was called on Bowie so the Mavs got ahead. As the third quarter ended, the Mavs were ahead by three, but the Bulldogs made a startling steal and scored a three pointer, evening out the score once again, 41-41.
The last quarter started out exactly like the third. Once again the Mavs got the ball and scored but Bowie was right behind them. When Bowie tried to score again, they failed and the Mavs got the rebound and scored.
Now that the Mavs were ahead, they score continuously until they were ahead by nine points. The Bulldogs made a comeback and used the fouls made by the Mavs to their advantage: they were now ahead 50-51.
With two minutes left on the clock, the Mavs chased after the ball and scored three points. Things were looking great for the Mavs as they went ahead by five points. In the last minute, the Bulldogs scored and ended regulation with a 55-55 tie.
The game shifted to overtime and the Mavs scored first. The score remained in the favor of the Mavs until the last minute.
A foul was called on the Mavs and Bowie made both free throws. Within the last 15 seconds, Bowie made a two pointer once again tying the score. When it looked like there would be another overtime, the Bulldogs made a three pointer and won the game.
The next game for the Mavericks will take place on Nov. 26 at Georgetown High School at 7:30 p.m.
