Golf Coach Matt Hoover, freshman Maia Espino, freshman Avery Willenborg, freshman Ashley Neves, junior Payton Bednarski, and junior Mandy Chittick celebrate their win at the Northside Invitational Golf Tournament on Oct. 29

Both the boys’ and girls’ golf teams started off their seasons strong.

The boys had their first success Nov. 4 in San Antonio where they took second place out of 20 schools at the Northside Invitational played at La Cantera Resort.

Senior Cameron Quinn shot a 74, leading the Mavericks with a third place individual finish out of 105 competitors. Senior Brett Gassman, junior William Kim, and sophomores Justin Chen and Mason Ruether also played well for the Mavericks.

“There hasn’t been anything negative so far, it’s just kinda going steady,” Ruether said.

As the season begins, the boys are already working hard.

“To train, we go out to our home course at Balcones every A Day and on the weekends we try to get in as much practice as possible,” Ruether said. “Our goal is to get out of our district and get to regionals.”

As for the girls’ golf team, they won the Northside Invitational Golf Tournament on Oct. 29 in Seguin.

Freshman Ashley Neves finished ninth individually, while freshmen Maia Espino and Avery Willenborg, and juniors Payton Bednarski and Mandy Chittick played well in the 54-shot victory over nine other schools.

They, too, have been working on being the best that they can be.

“We go to Balcones golf course to practice every B Day. Some days we’ll play only nine holes and some days we’ll play all 18. Sometimes we’ll go down to the bottom to the driving range just to practice driving,” Bednarski  said.

The girls are positive about this season.

“This is my first time ever playing golf and we’re doing really well so far,” Bednarski said. “My goals are to get a lot better than I am right now and to be the best that I can be.”
