Boys’ basketball wins against Austin, Cedar Park

Boys’ basketball has had a series of wins when the Mavs played Austin High (74-52) and Cedar Park (56-51).
The game against Cedar Park started fast with the team ahead of for the first two quarters, then dropping the third, and picking up the last, whereas in the Austin High game, the Mavs always had the lead.
“Both the Cedar Park and Austin High games were similar in that each team shot a bunch of 3’s,” coach Darrell Hagemann said. “I felt like we contested the 3’s and rebounded as group. Any time you play a team that shoots a bunch of 3’s, our guards have to get the long rebounds. We did a good job in both games of doing that.”
After starting the season with several defeats, the Mavs have greatly improved in their offense and defense.
“It takes a lot of work to play as a team,” senior Alex Cage said. “We won these games because of teamwork. In the game against Austin, the team was really good on defense and making shots.”
The Mavs also finished 3-2 in the Georgetown Tournament last weekend. The Mavs beat Houston Christian Ministries, Westwood and Manvel High, but lost by 2 to Byron Nelson High School and in overtime against San Antonio Churchill. Additionally Mavs just won 4 games at the Leander Classic.
“I was pleased with our effort in each of those five games,” Hagemann said. “That puts us at 9-5 on the year.”
The next game will be played against Cedar Ridge on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
