Varsity boys basketball finish season as district champs
The varsity boys basketball team clinched the title of District Champions to continue the tradition. On Feb. 23, the team played Lake Travis in Bi-District, the first post-season game. The game was close, but Lake Travis beat out the Mavs by 2 points (37-39) with a buzzer beater shot in the low-scoring game.
McNeil outscored the Cavaliers in the first quarter 10-6, but Lake Travis came back in the second quarter. After a strong third quarter from both teams, Lake Travis took the fourth quarter and ultimately the game.
“Most playoff games are usually decided by 4-6 points,” Coach Darrell Hagemann said.
The team had high hopes for the post-season. Senior Tre McCou said that the goal was, as usual, to make it all the way to state. Though Tuesday’s game marked the end of the 2015-2016 basketball season, the Mavs fought hard and walked away with the district championship.
“We were somewhat of a roller coaster throughout the year,” Hagemann said. “Sometimes we were really good and other times we struggled. But we had a very good season and finished 25-8 and 12-2 in district.”
The winning record is just one measure of the season’s success. McNeil led District 13 6-A by three games. They scored a total of 979 points over the course of the season, 155 more than they allowed. They also took third at the competitive Whataburger Invitational Tournament.
