Freshman Julia Perry starts the 300 meter hurdle strong. Perry was one of nine members of the girls track team who advanced to the Regional Track and Field Meet at Baylor on April 29-30.

Nine members of the girls’ track team competed in the Region II 6A track meet April 29-30, hosted at Baylor University. Though none advanced to State, they ran hard and represented well.

The 100 meter hurdlers, senior Miki Romain and sophomore Faith Tormusa-Koroma, placed in the top eight at prelims on Friday, so they competed in the finals on Saturday. Romain placed fifth and Tormusa-Koroma placed sixth.

“The hurdlers had a good regionals with three making the finals and two of the girls running a personal record for the year,” Head Coach Glenn Roberts said. “As for relays and other individual events, I was very happy with how hard each and every runner competed.”

In addition to racing, Romain attended prom with her boyfriend, senior Jonathan Boozer, who also participated in the meet.

Junior Haley Birt was the only girl who made it to Regionals in field events after placing third at Area in the pole vault. It was raining when she competed on Saturday, which offered a challenge, along with big crowds.

“It was a super energetic atmosphere,” Birt said. “It was really cool to be on the Baylor track. But it takes a ton of mental focus, throwing yourself 10 feet in the air, upside down on a bent piece of glass.”

Freshmen Julia Perry and Rozlyne Manor placed third and fourth respectively at Area, which qualified them for the meet at Baylor. They placed 11th and 12th at Regionals, holding their own in a difficult field of predominantly upperclassmen.

“I was really excited for the opportunity and I thought it was really cool coming in because a lot of the people were really fun to talk to and to get to know,” Perry said. “I also felt really nervous before my race, especially since the track and field complex was so big and I knew that I would be running against potential state runners.”

The 4×200 meter relay, run by Tobi Adebo (10), Aundrea Culliver (12), Jade Jeffries (12), and Kaymon Clark (11), placed 12th. They ran a time of 1:43.97, missing their season best by just half of a second.

Adebo also competed in the 200 meter dash.

The top two finishers of each race move on to State, held on May 14 at the University of Texas, where they will compete against the top two of the other three Regions.

“I loved getting the experience,” Perry said. “I’m hoping to go to regionals next year stronger and faster.”
