On Oct. 24, varsity football suffered a close 38-35 loss to Cedar Ridge to bring their record to 5-3 overall. Before the game, Cedar Ridge had six losses when playing at home, and their season win-loss ratio at that point was 3-5.
“It was an unfortunate loss,” senior wide receiver Zach Christie said. “The mindset was to beat them to make the run we’re having a little lighter. But I think we overlooked them because of their record.”
Despite the loss, senior wide receiver Jarrell Gary Jr did rushed for 175 yards, junior running back Zylen Hall scored two touchdowns on eight carries and senior linebacker Michael Jones made six solo tackles.
“I felt like we had something to lose, seeing how they are a team [whose] season is over in 2 weeks,” Jones said. “I feel like I did okay, but we just didn’t come out with the outcome we were looking for.”
Though their goal of winning district is out of the picture, the team is set on improving, particularly their tackling and defense, for the games against Manor High School and Hutto High School.
“It’s better that [the loss] happened now in season instead of [in the] post season,” Defensive Coordinator Jake Hale said. “It was something we were able to address and overcome as a team and focus on the next games. Seeing these next two games, they definitely aren’t something we can overlook.”
