After a massive 75-11 win in their final scrimmage of the season against Ann Richards, the Lady Mavericks carried the energy over into their first non-conference game of the season on Friday, Nov. 6 against the Pflugerville Connally Cougars, ending the night with a 69-42 win.
Stepping into the first quarter, the Cougars won the tip off and scored the first two points of the game. The quarter was back and forth between both teams, with the Lady Mavericks ending the quarter with just a three point lead., The second quarter was similar, continuing to be a tight match. Despite this, the Lady Mavericks’ defense did not allow the Cougars to gain a lead, ending the second quarter 26-21.
“[In] the first half we definitely learned a lot about what we needed to do in order to win,” Junior shooting guard Linley Mings said. “But I think everyone did really well as a team, we all hustled, and worked together.”
Beginning the second half, the Mavericks made defensive adjustments in order to keep the Cougars score low. Mings came into the second half 3-3 on threes, scoring three more in the second half, ending the game with 85% shooting accuracy. In the fourth and final quarter the Mavericks held the Cougars to just seven points, ending the competition with a strong 69-42 win.
“We started face guarding their best player in the second half, so it helped stop them from scoring,” Mings said. “We got a good lead, and it just felt really good. I felt confident in my shooting and my teammates really boosted me up, so it was a fun game.”
The Lady Mavericks will continue their preseason play on Tuesday, Nov. 11, against Dripping Springs at home at 7:00 PM.
