Women’s and Men’s Soccer began tryouts on Monday, Dec. 1, and finished on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Teams have to be finalized in order to prepare the girls team for their first game of the 2025-26 season away against Lockhart on Tuesday Dec. 16, and the boys for their first game against Eastview on Friday, Dec. 19.
Senior Gavin Wu has been playing soccer since he was eight years old and has reflected on what it’s like to try out as a senior and how he feels about the competitiveness of the team this year.
“I’m feeling good about the team this year because I feel like we have a really great coach and a lot of great players this year”, Wu said. “All of the seniors are on the fence about if we’re gonna make Varsity this year.”
Third year varsity returner senior Haylee Nguyen shared how the girls tryouts went and what was required of them.
“We ran a whole bunch on the first day, the second day was more skill based, a lot of, like, one on ones, trying to see how you could play with the ball and the third day was scrimmages,” Nguyen said. “We had one on one meetings with the coaches on the last day, and we figured out what team we made.”
With a new head coach this season Nyguen said she is excited to see how the team will look this year, and is confident in the new coaching staff.
“I’m actually really excited for the season, the coaching is a lot different this year, which I like,” Nguyen said. “I feel like it’s actually focused on the program and trying to change it for the good, and I feel like we have a very good connection as a team.”
On the boys side a few days before tryouts, Junior Joshua Castro shared the emotions he is feeling about the season beginning, especially not knowing which team he will make.
“I’m feeling a little nervous about soccer tryouts but I’m also feeling confident and I hope that I make the team that I belong on”, Castro said. “I only played on the team my freshman year and I’m also gonna try out my senior year.”
