On Monday Jan. 5, the Lady Maverick basketball team brought home their second win of the season in their non-conference match against the Wimberley Texans.
Starting off the game, the Texans won the tip off and scored the first points of the game with a corner three. The Mavericks struggled to score offensively, only scoring four points in the first quarter while also letting up defensively, ending the quarter down 4-15. Going into the second quarter the Mavericks began to pick up the pace, showing stronger efforts, and after multiple successful offensive plays, culminating in a 12 point run and multiple defensive stops the Lady Mavericks walked into half time down just 22-23.
“I think in the first quarter we weren’t taking our time on offense and we were rushing our shot, but going into the second quarter we adjusted and took our time to get the best opportunities and made sure to get the rebounds and second chances,” Senior Forward Lila Svoboda said. “We also knew how they were going to defend us, so we took that into consideration when running plays and having ball movement.”
Starting off the second half the Mavericks once again let up, allowing the Texans to gain another ten point lead, ending the third quarter 32-42. Starting the fourth quarter down, the Lady Mavericks made smart offensive plays, scoring three big three point shots while continuing to get defensive stops on their press that helped them gain the lead. Despite the Texans scoring four points in the last minute in an effort to catch up, the Lady Mavericks kept their lead, ending the game 54-49.
“The press when the game was close really gave us the win, I think the people up front trapping were being very smart and making sure not to foul, they were reading the offense really well and forcing a lot of turn overs, everyone was playing together and helping each other out,” Svoboda said. “This win really boosted team morale and helped show us what things we do that work, and what things don’t work. We know to play at a fast pace and we have great team chemistry. We are going to push our hardest for 4 quarters and fight hard the whole game.”
Svoboda hopes the Monday night win will give the Lady Mavericks much needed stamina walking into their game against Cedar Ridge on Friday, Jan. 9, as the last game of the first round of district play for the Lady Mavericks.
