French Culture Swells Throughout the Campus

The world today is influenced by multiple cultures and these influences will never stop impacting people’s lives. A prime example of this would be the French National Honor Society. Despite a large Spanish influence in Texas, FNHS expands to share the French culture at school.

“We want to increase the French presence in the school,” Secretary Monica Nguyen said. “For students to get together to learn French Culture.”

To expand this growing culture within the school, FNHS plans to collaborate with other clubs such as French Club, which discusses French culture but with no requirements as FNHS and fewer community projects. The groups participated in school events, such as the door decorating contest and the school carnival.

“We’re trying to get more into community projects,” Social Officer Lauren Mitchell said.

FNHS not only wishes to spread French culture to McNeil but to the community. They described the need to be more involved since the club had only participated in a few community services in the last few years, not as many as they wanted. In past projects, FNHS members have volunteered at Dell’s Children’s Hospital and participated in the Trail of Lights. FNHS plans to join the Trail of Lights again this year.

“We’re wanting to get ourselves known,” Historian Ellen Davenport said.

In past years, FNHS was generally small. Not many students applied in 2014. But this year, 17 new members were inducted into the club, greatly expanding the membership.

“They seem enthusiastic,” co-President Emily Wei said. “We’re going to have an active club.”

New members were present in the most recent meeting, the Halloween social, where they helped other members carve pumpkins.

“It is going to be a good turnout and a good year,” Nguyen said.
