Along with Austin’s own Ben Kweller, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran took the stage at UT’s Frank Irwin Center to begin the American leg of his tour. Playing songs from both his albums “Plus” and “Multiply,” he made the crowd of teenage fangirls scream with joy.
Opening the show was local artist Kweller. Playing a 30 minute show, Kweller showed his star potential. From the audience, it was obvious that he was enjoying playing and that he can sing and play guitar well.
What makes Sheeran stand out, is that he plays a two-hour long show with his microphone, guitar and loop pedal. Everything the fans heard was being played live which made the show organic and much more entertaining.
Thinking Out Loud, one of Sheeran’s most popular songs, was one of the highest points of the concert. Parents who brought their girls found themselves slow dancing along. Halfway through the song, a young couple was brought up on the stage and the guy told his girlfriend that he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. The entire crowd broke out saying, “Aww.”
Perfect as a closer, Sheeran performed Sing, a high energy party song. He had the crowd screaming, crying and feeling every emotion in the book during the concert and after he had left the stage.
