Pack Up, It’s Moving Day

New portable classrooms make teachers mobile

Within the next month, some teachers will be moving into the new portables located in the back parking lot along the C wing. The move is due to student population growth and the increasing need of more room in order to situate students into classes.

“As for now, the portables are still acquiring furniture,” Senior Administrative Associate Debi Casso said. “The teachers will move in as soon as they are ready.”

Affected teachers include Tom Decker, Iris Castillo, Keely Drummond, Sarah Hughes and Sami McLane who teach math, social studies, Latin, Algebra II, and Sociology, respectively. While this is occurring, some students have opinions against the change. Some teachers have been in their classrooms since they have started teaching. Decker, in particular, has taught in his classroom for 20 years.

“I like classes inside the school building because it has easier access to the restrooms,” senior Abdullah Coban said. “Sometimes it’s also raining, wet, and humid outside and it ruins my hair. Either that or it’s really hot, and I sweat and that ruins my hair, too.”

Other students identify with the teacher’s classroom itself. The longer the teacher stayed in the class, the more students associate the teacher with the room.

“Decker’s classroom currently has a very mathematic feel to it,” senior AB Calculus student Sruthi Kosuru said. “There is so much comfort and history to the room itself, that it’s harder to imagine anyone other than Decker teaching in there. Portables are much more cramped and compacted, which can make tests and quizzes kind of intimidating. The passing period is probably the worst part, having to cross the entire school to get to the new classroom.”

Even so, the change is inevitable, and students must adapt to the new situation.

“A good thing about moving is getting new seats,” Coban said. “That is a change I want.”
