StuCo Sponsors Supply Drive for Military Dogs

Student Council is sponsoring a supply drive for military dogs and Mavericks are encouraged to bring towels, blankets, shampoo, rubber Kongs, ear and eye wash, nail clippers, bowls, rope toys, and American-made treats from Jan. 18 to Jan. 29.

The project is a district-wide affair started by Westwood Student Council President Hyejee Bae, who contacted the other high schools in RRISD to help grow the idea.

“This is our first time attempting such a large project,” junior Laura Wimmer said. “All I can hope for is success.”

All the supplies collected across the district will be donated to the United States War Dog Association, a nonprofit organization run by former and current U.S. military dog handlers dedicated to the history of canine military service, establishing permanent war dog memorials, educating the public about military dogs, and placing them in forever homes after they retire.

The supply drives are the first part of an even larger project. In March, the student councils will host a doggie 5K in order to raise more resources for the dogs.

“I’m looking forward to other district-wide collaborative projects between RRISD student councils,” Wimmer said. “I know as a team we will be able to make something great.”
