There will be a staff development student holiday on Wednesday, Jan. 29 in observance of the celebration of Lunar New Year.
Lunar New Year is a major celebration in many East and Southeast Asian cultures that marks the first day of the lunar calendar. It’s a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors and hoping for good fortune in the coming year.
Before the celebration, families do spring cleaning to bring good fortune and participate in traditions such as feasting on special foods and participating in lively parades.
“[My family and I] usually give and receive envelopes with a few hundred dollars inside, enjoy a large dinner together and even set off firecrackers,” senior Shennie Ye said. “Having the day off is so nice because it gives us the time to fully enjoy the holiday without having to worry about going to school.”
2025 marks the Year of the Snake, which is seen as a symbol of wisdom, intuition and grace according to the Chinese zodiac.
