For the past seven years, the baseball team has had an announcer who has been there through it all. Senior Anthony Rodriguez has announced games and has even broadcasted a few games since the sixth grade when his oldest brother Brian was playing on the team.
Rodriguez began as just a simple JV announcer, but quickly worked his way up as Coach Andy Dawson asked him to be a full time announcer for the varsity soon after starting.
Rodriguez has seen many exciting games over the years including walk off home runs, heartbreaking defeats, and even the most recent playoff runs of the past two seasons.
As for the most memorable game he has announced, it was an easy choice for him.
“My freshman year against Stony Point was easily the most exciting game. We had a walk off home run to beat Stony Point. It was also the first game I broadcasted,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez has had many responsibilities besides just showing up to announce games. Before each season began, Rodriguez had to gather every single player’s walk up song, and had to add the newest songs to play between innings. He has kept all of this music on his laptop.
“I have never had to get a different laptop. I still have the same one that I started with.” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez has even hosted radio shows at team fundraising events as well as broadcasting selected games over the past three years.
Even though Rodriguez is almost done with being a student at McNeil, he still has plans to continue his broadcasting career at Concordia University next fall.
