Crime 101, a crime thriller based on the 2020 novel Crime 101 by Don Winslow came to theatres Feb. 13, 2026. The thriller focuses on Mike Davis, contract thief, who is played by Chris Hemsworth and follows Davis through heists and self discovery. The cast is notable and has actors like Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo and Barry Koughan but that might be the only thing “thrilling” about this movie.
The slower pace of the movie is not the main contributor to the boring nature of the movie, but instead a key factor is missing in the writing, emotion. The writing does nothing to invest you in the story, leaving you to wonder why you even care what’s happening. The characters are extremely disconnected from each other, leaving no opportunity for you to be emotionally invested in anything that happens during the movie. Hemsworth’s character is supposed to be complex, a thief who pulls off million dollar heists yet socially awkward and scared of hurting others. The writers never did anything to explain his socially awkward and delicate tendencies which just made his character more confusing than complex.
Other than the missing emotional depth the visual appearance was lacking as well. To give credit where credit is due, there were some amazing racing shots and panoramics of downtown LA, but other than that there was not the extravagance that one would expect out of a heist thriller. The heists mainly happened on streets giving the movie very unappealing visuals. The heists also did not feel to involve any risk other than getting caught and given that I couldn’t care less about the characters, that’s not a large risk.
Overall, the movie felt like an inside joke I wasn’t a part of, I felt confused and left out of the narrative while watching. The movie had good potential, the execution was just poor. If the movie picked up pace and used the extra time to explain the characters and their motivations and backgrounds more it would have been greatly improved.
