A follow up to her 2023 release, Mitski dropped her 8th studio album “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” on Feb. 27, 2026. The sound she produces with this album follows the theme of her past albums, essentially creating a mix of indie-rock and art pop.
The opening track, “In a Lake,” starts off intimately with the sound of gentle guitar backing her vocals. Her lyrics solemnly reflect on the confinement of living in a small city, how the darks of her past seem to follow her around, and feeling as if she can “never get away.” The second chorus provides a transition into a more chaotic instrumental, while she sings of the freedom of living in a large city and the vitality of a fresh start.
A stark shift from the opening, her fourth track “If I Leave” focuses on the horror of being completely estranged and the devastation of codependency. Her lyrics express the fear of leaving the one she loves, the one who understands her, and the isolation that comes with feeling unseen by everyone else in her life. The instrumental is minimal at first, though still reflecting her consistent theme of indie-rock, before it transitions half-way into something with more depth to mirror the weight of the decision presented to her.
“I’ll Change for You,” a single released on Feb. 4, 2026, soon became the album’s 7th track. The song shares the same themes of codependency but rather than facing the possibilities that come with leaving, she sings of the surrender that she undergoes in order to maintain the love that she’s found so prevalent in her life. A sharp contrast from the previous tracks, the instrumental is softer and leans into a more jazzy sound defined by brushed drums, bass, and delicate piano. Straying from the common theme of heavy, complicated instrumental aids in showing the truth of the pathetic desperation that comes with dependent relationships.
Her last track “Lightning” serves as a resolution to the album’s journey of isolation. The vocals and instrumental hold more clarity than many of the previous tracks, with the overall message harboring a more hopeful sentiment as well. To emphasize the optimistic message, the song’s instrumental maintains an ethereal sound, but not without her usual indie twist.
Overall, her new album contributes to a bigger, meta-narrative that she has built beginning with her first release. While there is no current information regarding her next release, this album represents a newfound evolution and a temporary “final act” until she comes out with the next “chapter.”
