The Mavericks tennis team traveled a short distance on Feb. 22 to compete in the James Hood Classic, hosted by the district champs and state-ranked Westwood Warriors. The tournament consisted of the top teams in the area, including Westwood, Vandegrift, Georgetown and Lake Travis.

Despite a solid season so far, none of the Mavs made it past the first round in the tournament. With two of the top seniors, Marielle Catalos and Sarang Bhadsavle, out due to injuries and school priorities, the Mavs had to adapt their lineup.

The consistent doubles pair of senior Brandon Minns and junior Alex Minca drew a tough first round match against a talented Rouse team and lost 8-2. The pair went on to beat two other teams, including Leander, before losing to Austin High in the consolation bracket.

Freshman Pranav Pradhan had a personal best tournament in the “B” boys singles draw. After losing his first match, Pradhan went on to win three matches in the consolation bracket before losing in the finals to a Rouse player.

The Mavs headed to Belton on March 1 to redeem themselves against the same teams that competed in the Westwood tournament.
