Maggie Smith, well-known for her roles in the Harry Potter series and Downton Abbey passed away at 89 on Sept. 27, 2024. Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by her close friends and family.
Although she was best known for her roles in the Harry Potter series and Downton Abbey she appeared in over 50 films. Smith first made her stage debut in a stage production of The Twelfth Night, as Viola, in 1952 at just 18 years old. Smith’s first screen appearance was in 1956 Child in the house.
In her acting career, Smith was nominated for six Oscars, winning two for the Prime of Miss Jean Bodie and California Suite, as well as receiving seven Bafta Awards.
Tributes were paid by her co-stars including Hugh Bonneville who said “Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit, and formidable talent.”
Prime Minister Richi Sunak also paid tribute to Smith stating that Maggie “Introduced us to new worlds with the countless stories she acted over her long career.”
Smith’s final roles included The Miracle Club in 2023 and Downton Abbey: A New Era in 2022.
Smith made a lasting impression on many people around the world throughout her career.
