Battery-powered candles flickered softly across the room as students stepped forward one by one, their names called and certificates waiting, each moment marking an achievement and a commitment to their future as new members of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS).
The NTHS induction ceremony invited together students, families and faculty to recognize academic achievement in career and technical education. Planned by student officers, the event focused on traditions such as the lighting of candles and the recitation of the NTHS pledge, focusing on both student success and a sense of community.
“My role in the ceremony as NTHS officer included discussing with the officer team what was required to conduct the ceremony, which included preparing the materials we needed, and adjusting the script,” junior Keerthan Thandu said. “During the ceremony my job as an historian was to speak a few lines about pillars of our club, receive an honorable pin and distribute certificates.”
After weeks of preparation, officers worked to ensure the ceremony felt professional and meaningful for inductees and their families.
“The role that I played in the induction ceremony was as an organizer,” senior Natalie Estrada said. “As vice president, I had to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possible. From something as simple as putting the certificates in the folder, to assigning people tasks, I was assuring that everyone had the best experience possible.”
For many involved, the most powerful moments came during the ceremony itself, when traditions symbolized the values behind the honor.
“Seeing the new members being inducted into the NTHS makes me so proud of all of the work the officers and I put in this year,” Estrada said. “As a new club, we didn’t have much expectations, but we were definitely surprised by the outcome. We have 70+ members and are growing. It’s amazing to see the full circle moment. From when the club was developed to now, we all have progressed so much and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this club in years to come.”
Returning members who once stood in the same place as inductees were able to reflect on their past induction.
“The part of the ceremony that was most meaningful to me was when members came to collect their certificates,” Thandu said. “It was a reminiscence when I collected my certificate last year, but this time I was one of the people behind their induction into the honors society, which was an extremely proud moment.”
Officers said the importance of the event is to recognize the hard work of the new inductees while encouraging students to continue working towards success.
“Ceremonies like this matter for student recognition because it marks an important milestone of a student’s success,” Thandu said. “Events like these allow students to celebrate their prolonged hard work with the support of their peers, and a tangible certificate. Ceremonies like these keep students persistent in their academics, motivating them to keep on working harder.”
